Alderman Van Johnson has made a push to have gun shows banned from the Savannah Civic Center, but he says those efforts have been blocked by state law.

Johnson said voters are accusing the city council and mayor of speaking with a "forked tongue." City leaders say they want to crack down on crime but gun shows are hosted at the civic center.

The city council was drafting an ordinance that would've banned gun shows in city-owned buildings. Then the city attorney discovered that's illegal because of a state law that prevents local governments from banning gun shows in their buildings.

Given Republicans' solid control of state government, Johnson doesn't think there's much point in lobbying to change the law. Still, he had strong words for the lawmakers.

"The state legislature is not on the street when someone has gotten shot," he said. "They're not there at the hospital when a mother is worrying about their children and whether they're living or dying. They're not looking when people are scared, when gunshots are coming through their windows. They don't live the life that many of our residents live."
