Think of it as a very special honor roll. Savannah Technical College named its student and teacher of the year Wednesday.
Dental hygiene student Ashley Smith was given the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership.
Susan Pinkston, who heads up the college's business management department, was given the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence. Pinkston said she understands the challenges her students face. Like many of them, Pinkston had a non-traditional college experience.
"I didn't go to college until I was in my thirties," she said. "And so I had a lot of obstacles in front of me that impeded me from going to college before that. So I always say, always persevere, keep your eye on the prize, which is graduation."
