SWAINSBORO, GA (WTOC) -
Dogs
sniffed around Swainsboro High School and police checked backpacks after the
school went into lockdown late Thursday morning. Nothing turned up during the
searches and lockdown.
Swainsboro Police Chief Randy
Ellison said the school went on lockdown after rumors that a student planned to
bring a gun in retaliation for something that happened Wednesday with another
student.
The
District Attorney's Office for the Middle Circuit of Georgia, Chatham County
Sheriff's Office, and Treutlen County Sheriff's Office K-9 units capable of
detecting fire arms and explosive devices were called in to assist.
After
authorities thoroughly searched the school, no weapon or firearm was found and
no witness has come forward to say that they actually saw a weapon. The search
took approximately three hours.
Law
enforcement discovered that gang activity among students motivated the rumor.
Five
juvenile students were arrested and will face charges related to gang
affiliation.
