BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

On Thursday, the Beaufort County Board of Education announced three finalists for the position of district superintendent and adjusted the timing of interactive public forums to accommodate the candidate's schedules.

The finalists are:

  • Gloria J. Davis, currently superintendent of the 9,100-student Decatur Public Schools in Decatur, Ill.
  • Kathryn LeRoy, currently director of high school programs for the 125,000-student Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Fla.
  • Jeffrey Moss, currently superintendent of the 9,850-student Lee County Schools in Sanford, N.C.

The finalists were chosen from a pool of seven candidates interview by the Beaufort County Board of Education earlier this week. They will all visit Beaufort County for a second interview with the Beaufort County Board of Education, a meeting with district employees and a public forum that will be televised live on the Beaufort County Channel.

The schedule for the public forums is:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 13, 7-8 p.m. – Finalist Jeffrey Moss, district office at 2900 Mink Point Blvd. in Beaufort.
  • Thursday, Feb. 14, 7-8 p.m. – Finalist Kathryn LeRoy, district office at 2900 Mink Point Blvd. in Beaufort.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7:30-8:30 p.m. – Finalist Gloria J. Davis, Bluffton Library, 120 Palmetto Way in Bluffton.

During the forums, the featured candidate will make a brief opening statement and then answer questions from audience members. The questions will alternate between live audience members and television viewers who email their questions.

The public will then be able to comment on the finalists using paper forms at the forums or electronic forms posted on the school district's website.

District educators will also have the opportunity to meet the finalists and ask questions prior to each public forum.

Beaufort County Board of Education Chairman Bill Evans says the board members are counting on feedback from educators and the public to help make their decision.

"The comments from parents, students, educators and community members will be a very important part of the process," Evans said in a press release..  "We hope that anyone who can't attend the forums in person will take the time to watch them on TV."

According to Evans, the board's goal is to have a new superintendent under contract by the first week in March.
