An elderly Savannah woman escaped her southside house uninjured Friday morning after a fire erupted in the home's attic.
Firefighters with Savannah Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to a residence on Barnhill Dr. at Harmon Bluff Rd. around 11:30 a.m. after communications center personnel received a fire alarm call at that address.
Firefights reported heavy smoke coming from the left side of the residence upon arrival. Once inside, firefighters encountered flames in the laundry room, a small sitting room and attic of the one-story brick house. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and fire damage was limited to the three affected areas. The rest of the house sustained water and heavy smoke damage. According to firefighters, it appears the fire started in the attic and broke through the ceiling into the laundry room.
The 86-year-old resident escaped the home prior to the firefighters' arrival. She told authorities that she will make arrangements to stay with family members who live nearby.
