Polio Survivors Exhibit to Raise Awareness

While you're out shopping for back-to-school items during this tax-free weekend, there's a chance to learn at Oglethorpe Mall. Dan Shehan and Richard Graham will be on hand with other members of the Coastal Empire Polio Survivors Association. They're hoping to bring awareness to the history of polio and the need for continued vigilance on the part of parents to protect their children through immunization.

"Because some of them, it's not even in their vocabularies, polio, they're not familiar with it at all," said Shehan. "We want to make people aware to keep the epidemic from coming back, we need to vaccinate. "

An iron lung, the kind used by polio patients back in the 1950s and '60s will be part of the exhibit. It's at Rich's Court in Oglethorpe Mall during mall hours this Saturday and Sunday.
