School bus driver cited after wreck sent 8 to hospital

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

The school bus driver who authorities say caused a wreck in Goose Creek which sent two high school students and six other people to the hospital on Tuesday has been cited for the incident.

South Carolina Highway Patrol has cited Yvonne Montgomery with driving too fast for conditions.

According to troopers, the school bus was traveling down Liberty Hall Road when it ran into the back of a Mustang, causing a chain reaction between vehicles.

When the Mustang was hit, it veered off to the left into on coming traffic where it was then hit by a van.

Berkeley County School District spokesperson Susan Haire said two students were hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries after the wreck..

Other students on the bus were taken to school by another bus, she added.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said six other people were also hospitalized.  The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

According to the Goose Creek Rural Fire Department, the road was closed for about an hour and a half after the wreck happened a little before 8 a.m.

Video from the scene indicates one vehicle involved suffered major front-end damage.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
