The suspect in a fatal shooting that happened Monday afternoon in Hampton County turned himself into authorities Tuesday.
The sheriff's office says Jerrell Brown and the suspect, Jerome Barnes, got into an argument around 2 p.m. Monday.
Sheriff T.C. Smalls says shots were fired in the middle of the argument, and Brown took off running into nearby woods, trying to get away from Barnes. Barnes ran after Brown and more shots were fired while both men were in the woods.
When deputies arrived, Brown's dead body was found in the woods, and Barnes was gone.
"There are a lot of unanswered questions, and we feel like the suspect can answer some of those questions," Smalls said. "It can either help him or hurt him."
One of the main questions Smalls has for Barnes is what happened?
"I don't think he's going to go around just shooting people." said Smalls.
Smalls said there's more to this story, and because there were no witnesses, Barnes is the only person investigators can rely on.
