This month marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Bill. In honor of that milestone event, the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, Fairlawn Baptist Church and Carver State Bank are recognizing one of the movement's pioneers.
They held a celebration Saturday night to honor one of the community's most active civil rights workers, Dr. Priscilla Thomas, and her family.
"I am overwhelmed," Thomas said. "It's been an awesome day to see the love that the community has for whatever contributions I have made."
Thomas received several awards for her contributions to the fight for civil rights. They also unveiled a photo of her that will be displayed at the Civil Rights Museum.
