BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

Bluffton Police Officers responded to an overturned vehicle at approximately 2:30 a.m. Feb. 14. While they were at the scene, a patrol vehicle was struck by a motorist who was later arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol for driving under the influence.

Early Thursday morning, a single vehicle collision took place on Bluffton Parkway near the Pinecrest subdivision. The vehicle hit several trees in the median and overturned. The driver was transported to Savannah Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

While authorities were conducting traffic control at the scene, a Bluffton Police vehicle was hit by a passing motorist. The driver fled the scene of the collision in his vehicle but was later stopped by other Bluffton Police Officers working on another collision further down the road. The driver, Coty White, 25, of Bluffton, was arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

White has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under suspension, hit and run property damage, operating uninsured motor vehicle, and open container in vehicle. He is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

The officer was out of his patrol vehicle during the collision and was not injured.
