Thousands of visitors expected in downtown Atlanta

Beginning Friday, expect large crowds in downtown Atlanta. In fact, police estimated up to 190,000 extra visitors a day through the weekend because of several big events.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus will perform through Monday at Philips Arena. Morning and evening shows are scheduled for the weekdays.  Saturday and Sunday will include a third, afternoon performance.

Monster Jam is scheduled to take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Dome. Drivers of the world's most popular monster trucks perform big stunts, typically to sell-out crowds.

The Georgia World Congress Center will also host two large events: the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show and the Cheersport Nationals. Both events attract thousands.

Residents offered visitors their advice for navigating the city.

"Obey the parking meters. Big weekends like, the metermaids love to make money," chuckled Bobby Sauer.

In a written statement, Atlanta police reminded people to take MARTA downtown or carpool. If taking your car, don't leave valuables inside, such as cash or electronics.

Extra police officers will patrol downtown.
