Underground explosion in downtown Atlanta sends manhole covers flying

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Atlanta police and fire units responded to the area around Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Broad Street in downtown Atlanta Monday night.

Police said when they arrived on the scene around 7 p.m., they found three manhole covers that had been blown from the street into the air. Emergency crews blocked off the area while authorities assessed the situation.

"It looks like there was an issue with an underground electrical vault. Georgia Power had several people on scene and a crew that responded to further investigate," said Officer John Chafee with the Atlanta Police Department.

Ten customers are without power. Power is expected to be restored Tuesday afternoon.

"I am not sure what force these things come up with, but a manhole cover is pretty heavy, so it takes some force to get it off the road and into the air," Chafee said. "It is something that is concerning, so we want to make sure the issue is addressed. Fortunately, no one was injured."
