Two Arrested After Southside Bank Robbery

Police converged on Savannah's south side today after two men robbed the Bank of America near Savannah Mall. A one-hour manhunt and a trail of money led police to both suspects.

Bank of America customers say they were terrified when they saw FBI officials in front of their bank and search dogs and helicopters all over the area.

"I was surprised," said Kathy Phim. "This doesn't happen in the Southside very much."

"You don't expect it at all," added Lisa Dougherty.

Savannah-Chatham police say the two men got away in a green jeep that was reported stolen just a day earlier. The men attempted to get away when one of the bags containing the stolen money exploded, spraying red dye all over the cash and the robbers' clothes.

The men then dumped the jeep on Rio Road, grabbed as much money as they could, and ran into the woods.

After police set up a perimeter and conducted the manhunt, they were able to find one of the suspects with cash in his pocket. Several minutes later police caught the second suspect.

Now neighborhood residents are just trying to make sense of it all. "To have crime in your area, it's always a scary thought," said resident Deborah Marsh.

"We have a nice town, a nice community," said Dougherty. "This is scary, real scary."

The suspects, now in FBI custody, are identified as 24-year-old Jamel Rashad Jinks and 23-year-old Christopher Michael.
