One Chatham County commissioner is rallying to keep local museums from having to pay property taxes. Today Commissioner Frank Murray held a news conference at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler. Right now, historic buildings are exempt from paying property taxes, but two weeks ago the Chatham County Board of Assessors said there was no law exempting museums.
Murray says the board shouldn't take further action until this law is investigated further. "Museums are bringing revenue in the community and there is no other government agency or entity anywhere else that I know of where they tax museums," he said.
Murray will take his resolution to the Chatham County Commission meeting on August 13. We'll let you know what happens.
