STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Hundreds of runners will fill the streets of Statesboro on Feb. 23 to help a cause many may not have previously recognized.

The current Leadership Bulloch class teamed with Open Hearts Mission to host The Chokolate Run, a 5k race. Proceeds will go toward the establishment of a facility to help the homeless in Bulloch County.

"Probably few of us in the class knew there was such a problem," explained Jennifer Douglas, Leadership Bulloch. "But this is a positive, fun way to help an issue in our community."

Douglas said more than 700 runners registered before the online cut-off. However, runners will be able to register Saturday morning starting at 7:30 a.m. in front of Statesboro City Hall on North Main Street.

Douglas also invited non-runners to attend to learn more about Open Hearts Mission. The organization is currently funded by several local churches and helps homeless people through short term stays in local motels. But they group hopes to soon secure land and begin construction of their own location.
