Attempted rapist returns back to scene of the crime?

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS, GA (CBS46) -

A 911 call made Wednesday has joggers and University of Georgia police back on high alert after a woman believes she saw a man matching a sketch released in January.

The sketch is of a man who put a knife to a UGA student's throat and threatened to rape her on Jan. 18.

According to a statement by UGA Chief Jimmy Williamson, "The victim reported that she was approached by an unknown male who put a knife to her throat and threatened to rape her and cause her bodily harm. After some dialogue with the perpetrator, the victim was able to flee to a safe location. The victim did not receive injuries during the incident."

On Wednesday, police believe he may have gone back to the State Botanical Gardens.

At about 3:30 p.m., a woman called 911 after she thought she saw the man matching the description. Before police could arrive, the person was gone.

Many joggers stopped going to the State Botanical Gardens after the initial attack and said it scares them to even think he could've been there again on Wednesday.

"Today was my first day back," Valerie Roper said. "It is scary, but I also think we can't live our lives in fear and keep us from the things we want to do, if we do, the bad guys win. I just think we need to be cautious and careful."

Some joggers we spoke to said they will only jog with a friend. Others keep a key in between their fingers or carry mace.

"It definitely discourages me to run alone, because I usually don't mind, because you see people walking and running all the time here and nothing seems to happen," UGA student Gillian Marshall said. "But, if this is happening, I feel like I should get a running buddy."

Anyone who may have information regarding this incident or was in the area in question and may have seen this individual should call 911 or the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200 immediately.
