ATLANTA (WTOC) -
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency is offering tips on how to prepare for floods and stay safe as part of its Ready Georgia campaign.
Floods are the No. 1 severe weather-related killer in the U.S., and the No. 2 killer in Georgia, according to GEMA.
Nearly half of all flood-related deaths occur when people drive into floodwaters and their vehicle is swept away.
GEMA offered these preparation tips:
Flood preparation tips:
- Know the flood risk for where you live. To find out, call your local emergency management agency.
- Property insurance does not typically damage caused by flooding. Find out what your policy includes and whether you need more coverage. The National Flood Insurance Program offers flood insurance. Go to FEMA Business NFIP for more information.
- Raise your furnace, water heater and electric panel if they're in areas of your home that could be flooded.
Have a plan:
- Get supplies together for a portable ready kit. Plan how you'll leave and where you'll go if you have to evacuate.
- Make sure your car's gas tank is full.
- Move furniture and valuables to higher floors of your home.
Stay Informed:
- Monitor conditions by using a NOAA Weather Radio for flood information.
- Do not drive around barricades.
- Never drive through standing water. Two feet of water can float a full-sized car, according to GEMA.
- Move to higher ground away from rivers, streams, creeks and storm drains.
- Stay out of floodwaters, if possible. Water may be contaminated or electrically charged.
- Stay away from downed power lines.
- Do not return home until authorities determine it is safe. After floodwaters recede, roads and bridges may be weakened and could collapse, according to GEMA.
