Unitarian Universalists are not known for their pomp and ceremony, but at 2p.m. Saturday dignitaries and members will break out the regalia for the installation of their new minister, David Messner, in their historic "Jingle Bells" church at 311 E. Harris St. on Troup Square. A reception in the square will follow.
Rev. Messner began serving the church in August 2012. Messner is the third called minister to serve the church since the neo-Gothic building was repurchased by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah in 1997.
Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson, Rev. Billy Hester, and Rabbi Robert Haas are among the local dignitaries on the program.
"I'm looking forward to continuing the tradition we have of being a church that welcomes all kinds of people. The universalist part of our heritage is opening the doors wide to everyone to have a place here," said Reverend David Messner.
This church is where the song that would become known as Jingle Bells was written in 1857.
