SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Big changes have been under way at Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Animal Control Unit over the last few years, including a new facility.

This week, new renovations construction repairs to the relatively new kennels and a brand new commander of the unit. One was expected, the other was a surprise.

While construction renovations have begun and were announced earlier in the month, WTOC learned late last week, Police Chief Willie Lovett decided to make a command switch, and moved long-time animal control unit commander, Lt. Brenda Boulware to the West Chatham Precinct, reassigning her as a shift commander.

Boulware will be replaced at animal control by Lt. Cary Hill, who started Monday and was introduced to his support staff and volunteers.

Lt. Hill takes over for Boulware as renovations begin to repair seams in the kennels which have hampered efforts to keep the areas clean. The construction will take four to six weeks, and will put extra urgency in adopting out animals as one wing at a time will be out of service.

In all, about 40 kennels will be under repairs, and with new animals coming in everyday, animal control officer Christina Suthern told WTOC they have had extra help from the community, rescue groups, a renewed working relationship with the Savannah area Humane Society and others to adopt animals out and keep from putting any animals down.

"We need the public to remember we are here and to keep up the support. The outpouring has been fantastic. We really want them to keep up their support and continue to come in and adopt. Rescues, please continue to come in and pull and get these animals new homes," Suthern said.

If weather doesn't cooperate, Suthern says it could take longer than the scheduled four to six weeks, which means, finding animals new homes becomes even more urgent.
