Fatal Shooting in East Savannah

A deadly shooting in east Savannah shut down Collins Street just off of Waters for several hours. Police are still trying to piece everything together, but it looks like someone from one car shot through the windshield of another car, killing the driver.

Right around 7:30pm last night, people around Collins Street heard gunshots, followed by a squeal of tires. Witnesses say the victim put his car in reverse, going just a couple hundred feet before crashing into a house, where he fell out with a gunshot wound to the chest.

"Looking down the street and I seen the young man stretched out in the street right after we came out of our home," said area resident Joanne Carlers.

The victim died before emergency crews got him to the hospital. Police say they don't have any suspects yet, but think the shooter was in another car that took off.

"Possibly another vehicle was involved, [detectives] are running down leads trying to identify it," said Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Bucky Burnsed. "At the same time they're trying to identify the victim."

Because the victim unsuccessfully tried to drive off, the crime scene ended up shutting down a stretch of Collins Street for several hours. "It is spread out over a couple of blocks, but detectives are still trying to piece all that together," Burnsed said.

As of this morning, police have identified the victim as Craig Romero Brown, Jr., age 21.

Police are sill looking for any leads in this shooting. If you have any information, call CrimeStoppers at 234-2020.
