Property Assessments Going Up in Beaufort County

If you live in Beaufort County, you can expect a property reassessment notice in your mailbox soon. The notices are going out tomorrow for more than 84,000 properties that have increased in value across the county. In fact, some values have increased by as much as five times the previous assessment.

But the county has yet to set the millage rate, and it looks like that part of the equation is going down.

"It doesn't necessarily mean the taxes will increase that amount, because the fact that the millage rate will be rolled back," said county tax assessor Bernice Wright. "You'll have a lower millage rate in 2004 than you did in 2003. So it doesn't mean your taxes will increase at the same rates as the increase in value."

These are just notices, not bills. The tax bills will be mailed out in October.

If you have any questions about the reassessments, contact the assessor's office at 843.470.2850 or toll free at 866.470.2850, email questions to or visit and follow "assessment information" links.
