HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Homes near Baxter Street in Hinesville were evacuated Wednesday after a Civil War cannonball was found. The neighborhood reopened around 6 p.m.

The bomb squad, Hinesville Fire, Liberty County Emergency Management and a specialized crew from Fort Stewart responded.

According to authorities, some teenagers went over to the dump and started rummaging around. They found a cannonball and brought it home to the subdivision. Folks then called authorities because they thought the cannonball might still be active and dangerous.

The device looked like a metal bowling ball and had something screwed into the top of it, which is what concerned authorities.

Fort Stewart soldiers took the device away.
