HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Fire crews evacuated PineRidge Plantation in Hinesville on Wednesday after a cannonball was found.

Police said someone found the cannonball at the dump and brought it back to the neighborhood before realizing what it was.

"He advised me to put it in the middle of the yard and call authorities," Luis Pacheco said. Pacheco's son found the cannonball.

"Once I realized it had a cork screw and could be active, I knew from past experience what was going to happen," Pacheco said.

Pacheco called the police, which led to the evacuation. A Fort Stewart bomb team took the cannonball to a nearby airport, where it was detonated.

"It is very common to have cannonballs in Georgia because of the Civil War and such," Capt. DeAnn Getter said.

Getter said it was important they take care of the bomb.

"If it would have went off, it could have caused casualties and the house could have been gone," Getter said.
