Savannah, GA -
According to the Academy of Pediatrics, suspending or expelling students from school can have serious, unintended consequences.
The study says even though suspension and expulsion are used to punish students, the results can lead to student alienation, delinquency, crime and substance abuse. Dr. Doris Greenberg specializes in developmental behavior, and believes this form of punishment often rewards students who don't want to be in school doing work in the first place.
Dr. Greenberg also believes students are often singled out, when in reality, they're suffering from attention deficit disorders or mood disorders.
"We know that depression in children often presents mad, bad, sad kids. They act out, they're irritable, they tell people off, they feel very uninvolved in school. And what do we do if we expel or suspend them? We prove society is mean."
The AAP also says school "zero-tolerance" policies towards kids behavioral problems do no good, stating that those children often end up never getting a high school diploma.
