A Hardeeville woman is wanted by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office in connection with stealing and using the credit cards of a hospice patient.

An 80-year-old woman at the Hawthorne Inn told staff on Jan. 21 that she couldn't find three credit cards that she kept in her room.

The credit cards were found to have been recently used to make several unauthorized purchases, totaling more than $10,000, according to the BCSO.

Video surveillance identified 31-year-old Shamika Kawanda Smart and Smart's aunt, 51-year old Fannette Renee Housey, as having used the cards at several places in the area, according to the BCSO.

When the cards were stolen and used, Smart worked at Hawthorne Inn as a med tech and was caring for the victim, according to the BCSO.

Housey was arrested on Feb. 15 on one count of financial transaction card fraud. She has since been released on bond.

Arrangements were made for Smart to turn herself in to investigators Thursday. The sheriff's office said she failed to appear.

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding Smart's whereabouts to contact either Investigator Sgt. L. Albertin at 843.255.3413 or Crimestoppers.

Smart is wanted on one count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. She is described as a black female who is about 5'03" and weighs 125 lbs.

To report crime, citizens can call Crimestoppers at 888.CRIME.SC (274.6372) or text the word TIPSC with a message to CRIMES (274637).
