Felon convicted for possession of stolen assault rifle

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A convicted felon was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for possessing an assault rifle.

Alex M. Bennett, 32, of Broxton, Ga., burglarized a Hazlehurst home, where he stole a SKS semi-automatic rifle with a 20-round magazine, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Georgia.

Bennett was also sentenced to serve five years of supervised release after his prison term.  

He three prior convictions for drug offenses and robberies, which made him classified as an "armed career criminal" under federal law, according to the U.S. District's Attorney's Office. Because of that classification he was subject to a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years.
