The Beaufort High School "Green" academic team is on their way to Washington, D.C. after advancing in Beaufort County's second annual Academic WorldQuest Competition Saturday.
Beaufort High's Green Team and Hilton Head Island High's Columbia Team were tied at the end of a three-hour marathon of questions, beating six other high school teams, which featured 100 difficult topics about current events and national security issues.
The Academic WorldQuest Competition was held Saturday at Hilton Head Island High and presented by The World Affairs Council of Hilton Head in partnership with the Beaufort County School District.
Academic WorldQuest is the flagship educational program of the national network of World Affairs Councils and is held annually in more than 40 U.S. cities.
Beaufort High's team won the tie-breaker by naming more of OPEC's 12 member countries than the Hilton Head team.
Second-place Hilton Head Island High's Columbia Team each won a $100 gift certificate to Best Buy and third-place Beaufort High's Gray Team each won a $50 gift certificate to Best Buy as well.
The winning Beaufort County team will travel to Washington for a national competition on April 27.
