2013 Walk for American Red Cross Day Four

TOOMBS COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - The fourth day of the Walk for American Red Cross started in Candler County, moved into Tattnall County, and included a Saturday night in Toombs County.

Metter mayor Billy Trappnell was part of the sendoff from the town where "everything's better". Leaving Bevrick's, it was time to hike over Interstate 16 and down Highway 121 aka "The Woodpecker Trail".

Arriving in Tattnall County's Cobbtown, I wrapped up at Westside Foods. The store/eatery recently reopened after it burned to the ground last fall. Owner Larry Collins, also the city's fire chief, remembered volunteers with Americcan Red Cross supporting fire crews.

Members of the Cobbtown Lions Club dropped down with a donation.

The day wrapped up as I served food and bussed tables at Benton Lee's Steakhouse on the Toombs County bank of the Altamaha River. Owner Vickey Tapley has been a supporter of Red Cross for several years. In 2006, the restaurant burned to the ground and fire crews, as well as Red Cross volunteers, spent hours fighting it.

SUNDAY: 14 year old Kennedy Joiner of Toombs County is walking with me from the Lyons city limit on Highway 152 to downtown Vidalia.
