SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Renovation of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's dog kennels have the Animal Control Division pushing for animal adoptions.
The Department of Agriculture ordered the renovation in the Animal Control center to address seams in concrete slabs that affect cleaning efforts in many of the dog kennels.
Renovation work on the three wings of the center began February 25 and will be a four to six week process. The construction has decreased room for the dogs by an entire wing at a time, reducing the center's holding capacity by a third.
The center is required to hold animals at least five days before euthanizing, but staff members typically hold animals as long as possible to allow for adoption. Currently the center holds 102 dogs and puppies in its 116 dog kennels and has 70 cats and kittens
The public can view and adopt animals at the center everyday from 1p.m. to 5 p.m. at 7211 Sallie Mood Drive. Licensed Rescue groups will have access to the kennels beginning at noon each day.
The Animal Control staff has also reached out to veterinarians and pet stores in the area with posters to encourage adoption.
For more information about the adoption process, contact the Animal Control center at 912-351-6750.
