The heat is on for literacy

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The heat was on at Port Royal Plantation Hilton Head Island.

8 top chefs cooked off in two preliminary rounds, as nearly 800 guests sampled finest fare from 18 Lowcountry restaurants, hung out with 17 top Lowcountry authors, bought books and had them signed. Chef Stephen Stewart of Tidepointe took on Executive Chef Ed Connors of the Westin in the championship round. The "Best Under Fire," chosen by a distinguished panel of judges was Ed Connors. The 7th annual Cooks n' Books event is hosted by Friends of Literacy, for the Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry.

"It really enables literacy volunteers to offer their programs to help people be functionally literate in this community, with their families and in the work place," said Vice Chairman Ellen Walton.

The people's choice award for restaurants was the Chart house. Our own Sonny Dixon was there to call the action for Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry.
