SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
WTOC Vice President and General Manager Dr. Bill Cathcart is now a civilian aide to the secretary of the Army after a ceremony Monday afternoon at Hunter Army Airfield.
Cathcart becomes one of only four such civilian aides to the secretary of the Army from the state of Georgia.
He was sworn in by Third ID Deputy Commanding General Rear Brig. Gen. John Hort. It was actually Major Gen. Abe Abrams of the Third ID - currently commanding Regional Command South in Afghanistan - who nominated Cathcart. There's significant vetting to ensure a nominee has the leadership and character qualities along with a strong army relationship. The duties are significant.
"It's all about the connection between the community and the military that lives and works around that community. Having a CASA representative here in the coastal area of Georgia truly is a very powerful statement that not only our secretary of the army is making but to the entire state of Georgia," Hort said.
Friends and colleagues from the business and military communities were on hand to congratulate Cathcart who is he first ever appointment from this area. His thoughts as ever were with the soldiers currently fighting in the Middle East.
"I can't possibly thank them enough for their incredible service to our country, and we look forward to having them back as soon as possible and i thank god for bringing them back to a very grateful nation," Cathcart said.
One advantage will be in having Cathcart constantly remind the secretary of the Army and others of the community's strong support for Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.
