BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -
Are you prepared for a natural disaster?
Some in the Lowcountry say they don't prepare because nothing ever happens there. But, one woman says she plans for the worst, and hopes for the best.
Willie Moore goes to the local Publix once a week, but not just for groceries. She's also buying supplies for her evacuation kit.
She says you never know when a tornado, hurricane, or some other natural disaster will hit Hilton Head Island.
"I always make sure I have food, some batteries, some water, dog and cat food, any important records and papers that we need, first aid kit, and flashlights, and my weather radio," said Moore.
Moore says, after spending years in Minnesota and Pennsylvania, she has experienced all kinds of different weather.
She has lived on the Island for three years and has not had to deal with any bad weather. But she believes it's just a matter of time before something happens.
"Oh yeah, eventually it will happen here, and when it's time to evacuate, we'll just go," she said.
Chuck Runnion, the director of Beaufort Countys Emergency Management Division, says everyone needs to have the same mentality as Moore.
"Basically, every family needs to have what I call a bug out plan. The last thing you want to do is go into any type of weather or severe situation unprepared," said Runnion.
And anything worth doing is worth doing right.
"I am probably over prepared," said Moore.
