Fire chief urges residents to use caution with space heaters

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

One danger this time of year is space heaters. Savannah Fire Chief Charles Middleton is urging people to be cautious when using space heaters to keep warm.

"Just be aware. Be aware of your surroundings. Be aware and take the time to make sure. Just glance at the heater occasionally and make sure it is okay and that there is nothing around it that is combustible," said Middleton.

Another tip from Middleton, never use an extension cord. He says an extension cord has an increased risk of shorting out and causing a fire.
