Supporters Rally for Former Principal

The controversy continues over the termination of a Low Country elementary school principal. Members of the St. Helena community rallied support outside of St. Helena Elementary School in protest of the termination of the former principal, Dr. Laverne Davis.

"We want to see her reinstated," supporter Saundra Boyd said.

"I'm out here today because I've had my children, grandchildren, all come to this school here with Dr. Davis," said Ella Hill. "She's accomplished so much with the children."

The controversy started when the superintendent, Herman Gaither, recommended Dr. Davis' contract not be renewed. But the community thought it had been resolved. In June, Superintendent Gaither and Dr. Davis signed an agreement that would reinstate Dr. Davis's contract, but that never happened.

In fact, the school board voted not to renew her contract. Now, Davis supporters are taking their message to the streets.

"e as a community have continued to ask questions," said Boyd. "Our voices have been unheard. We have representation that has not carried our word to the board, and we are still very concerned that we want proven leadership that will help our children meet with future success."

"People are certainly able to voice their opinions, but the school board and district have heard that opinion and yet we've made our decision that's in the best interest of the children," said John Williams with the Beaufort County School District.
