Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire opens a new family room at Memorial.SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire is expanding its services to families with critically ill or injured children.
On March 11, it will official open a Ronald McDonald Family Room on the third floor in the Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center.
"The idea when they walk in here is that they are taking a break from the hospital, they are entering a home environment. They can come in here they can check in they can take a nap they can take a shower, get a bite to eat and then return to their child," said Nikole Layton, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire.
"Memorial cares for some of the sickest children in our region and this new 1,000-square-foot space can provide a home-like environment for those families who are away from home. We are grateful for this opportunity to continue to partner with organizations benefitting our most precious community resources," said Bill Lee, Memorial's senior vice president.
The Family Room relies on trained volunteers. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
"The family room operations rely solely on volunteers, so if there is no one here then it will not be open. The volunteers just make sure the families are comfortable and enjoy their stay here," said Layton.
