SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
About 20 homes have been evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a gas leak.
Construction crews working around Ferguson Avenue, Lehigh and Shipyard Road hit a gas line.
Southside Fire Asst. Chief Hugh Futtrell said it happened at about 3:24 p.m. at 244 Shipyard Road. The road has been closed for weeks for drainage installation work.
Someone was working with a backhoe when they hit a major gas line. The area is expected to be shut down for the next three hours until about 7 p.m.
Drivers can take Whitfield Avenue to the other end of Beaulieu to get onto Burnside Island.
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police evacuated a 500-foot area around the leak. They're letting people out, but not into the area. Southside EMS made one medical evucation for a resident there who recently had surgery.
Crews have just arrived to begin working on the broken gas main.
