CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
According to authorities, I-16 westbound is closed from I-516 to Chatham Parkway due to an incident involving a police car that ended up off the road near the trees. Another police car also ended up in the ditch on the westbound side of I-16.
Eastbound traffic is also slow moving. Motorists should avoid the area.
One Metro officer was injured and taken away in an ambulance.
The incident started just before 6:45 p.m. More than a dozen police cars are on the scene.
WTOC also has a crew at Burroughs and 42nd, where police have taped off an area. A Chevy Malibu is located within the taped off area. Officers on the ground and a helicopter are searching the area. Authorities say the scene is connected to the incident on I-16.
WTOC is receiving reports that two people, including a police officer, were shot during the incidents. WTOC has also received reports that the incident started when a suspect stole a sergeant's patrol car. Police have not confirmed this information.
I-16 westbound could be closed for another couple of hours.
