SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are still piecing together information about a chase involving police Wednesday night that ended in shots fired.

Interstate 16 westbound was closed from I-516 to Chatham Parkway for hours overnight due to a wreck involving a police car that ended up off the road far into the trees. Another police car also ended up in the ditch on the westbound side of I-16, according to authorities.

The incident started just before 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. More than a dozen police cars responded to the scene on I-16. One SCMPD officer was injured and taken away by ambulance. There is still no word on the condition of that officer.

At about the same time, a situation occurred at Burroughs and 42nd streets, where police had an area taped off around a Chevrolet Malibu.

Officers on the ground and by air searched the area. Authorities said that activity was connected to the incident on I-16.

WTOC received reports that two people, including a police officer, were shot during the incidents. WTOC also received reports that the incident started when a suspect stole a sergeant's patrol car. Authorities have not yet confirmed this information.
