HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF/WIS) – Hartsville police have charged a man with murder in the death of 51-year-old Chandler Spencer, a man best known for singing the classic hook in Rob Base's hip hop anthem 'Joy and Pain.'

Spencer, whose stage name was Omar Chandler, was found dead Monday in the hallway of his apartment by family members. He was last seen Thursday.

Hartsville Police arrested 46-year-old John Rubin Mitchell Saturday and charged him with murder. Police say Mitchell could be charged with grand larceny and petit larceny.

"It's just shocking to know your next door neighbor - someone you see every day and you just found out was stabbed," said next door neighbor Mike Davis. "He keeps to himself, he doesn't let people in the house he is not familiar with, so it's alarming, and it could be someone he knew very well, to do this to him."

Spencer's Washington Street apartment is right across from Hartsville High School. "The entire city is safe," says Hartsville Police Chief James Hudson. "It's just unfortunate that you have something like this occur."

Investigators have located Spencer's white 1998 Chrysler Town and County minivan, which was taken from his home.

Spencer was the booming voice behind the Frankie Beverly hook, "Joy and pain... like sunshine and rain" in Rob Bass and DJ EZ Rock's 1988 hit.

According to his web site, in addition to his work with Rob Base, Chandler has performed with Bobby Brown and Teddy Riley.

He had also released at least one solo album.
