The National Troopers Coalition held its annual conference Thursday on Hilton Head Island.
Troopers from 47 states met to talk about improving police services by encouraging cooperation between the different police associations.
Troopers discussed the state of the economy and how it affects their departments, and their ability to do their job.
"Well certainly we understand that we have some tough economic times in front of us, so we want to make sure that our troopers are taken care of in terms of salary, their compenstation. We want to make sure that there are no shortcuts with regard to safety concerns and equipment," said Dave Latimer, the coalition's spokesman.
The troopers also want to get the message out that public safety is important.
