The American Red Cross is helping former mayor of Waycross after his home was destroyed by raging flames.
Red Cross Disaster Action Team members helped John Knox, 67, and his wife Yvonne Knox, 62, by supplying them with a hotel for three nights, funds to buy food for a week, comfort kits supplied with personal hygiene items and funds for clothing.
The Red Cross was called to the home on Rainbow Drive at about 8:30 a.m. Friday. The Knoxes were home at the time of the blaze. Yvonne Knox discovered the home on fire.
"I was backing out of the driveway and saw smoke coming from the rear of the house," she said in a statement. "I ran back to the door and yelled for John and the dog and when we got out, I called the fire department right away."
Yvonne Knox said they have contacted their insurance adjuster and are going to look for a place to rent until permanent living arrangements can be made.
