SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
The
Fort Pulaski National Monument commemorating Women's History Month on Saturday
with programs focused on women in the Civil War era.
During the Battle Between the States, women joined men on
the battlefield.
Both the Union and Confederate armies prohibited women
from enlisting, so women disguised themselves and assumed masculine names so
they could be a part of the armies, according to the National Park Service.
On Saturday, the park's historic weapons demonstrations
will feature the park's female staff and volunteers to honor those women who
served in the Civil War. Cannon firings are scheduled for 11 and noon and will solely
be performed by women.
Fort
Pulaski National Monument will host two fashion shows of Civil War era clothing.
At
1 p.m. Victorian Secrets: Civil War
Ladies Undergarments will go over the layering dressing process of 19th
century women. A Civil War Fashion Show will take place at 2 p.m.
The
staff and volunteers of Fort Pulaski will demonstrate day and work dresses to
ball gowns from the period.
Throughout March, an exhibit
about women during the Civil War era will also be on display in the park's Visitor
Center. The Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
