PORTAL, GA (WTOC) -
A Portal woman was
arrested and charged with three counts of cruelty to children living with
deplorable living conditions.
Bulloch County sheriff's
deputies are called to a home at 8 a.m. March 9 in the first block of Aaron Station
Road on a report of child cruelty/neglect.
A woman told deputies
she went there to pick up her grandchild and noted that the living conditions were
unsanitary and called the sheriff's office, according to the BCSO.
Three children, ages
6, 9, and 12, lived at the home along with 30-year-old Audrea Michell Marks.
The deputy saw animal feces throughout the home including on the children's
bedding, there was a strong smell of animal urine and a kitchen trashcan was
leaking, according to the BCSO.
The children told the
deputy that they had not eaten since school lunch the previous day. Marks was arrested and
the Dept. of Family and Children Services was contacted.
The children were
placed in more suitable accommodations and DFACS will remain involved in their
case.
Marks is charged with three
counts of first-degree cruelty to children, three counts of reckless conduct
and one count of disorderly conduct. She is being held without bond at the Bulloch
County jail.
