A Portal woman was arrested and charged with three counts of cruelty to children living with deplorable living conditions.

Bulloch County sheriff's deputies are called to a home at 8 a.m. March 9 in the first block of Aaron Station Road on a report of child cruelty/neglect.

A woman told deputies she went there to pick up her grandchild and noted that the living conditions were unsanitary and called the sheriff's office, according to the BCSO.

Three children, ages 6, 9, and 12, lived at the home along with 30-year-old Audrea Michell Marks. The deputy saw animal feces throughout the home including on the children's bedding, there was a strong smell of animal urine and a kitchen trashcan was leaking, according to the BCSO.

The children told the deputy that they had not eaten since school lunch the previous day. Marks was arrested and the Dept. of Family and Children Services was contacted.

The children were placed in more suitable accommodations and DFACS will remain involved in their case.

Marks is charged with three counts of first-degree cruelty to children, three counts of reckless conduct and one count of disorderly conduct. She is being held without bond at the Bulloch County jail.
