ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Atlanta Police Department is looking to hire Spanish-speaking officers and 911 operators.

In addition to increasing its language base, the department is also seeking to reinforce its continued commitment to diversity and inclusion.

"Officers from diverse backgrounds bring an important perspective and cultural sensitivity that furthers APD's goal to serve and protect citizens across the wide spectrum of Atlanta's diverse population," said Officer Antonio Gonzalez, the Department's Hispanic liaison.

The city of Atlanta's Hispanic population has increased to 21,815, according to 2010 U.S. Census figures, a 16.5 percent increase from the 2000 Census.
