SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - According to a report released by the Federal Trade Commission, Georgia ranks No. 2 in the country in cases of identity theft. The FTC recorded almost 60,000 complaints surrounding identity fraud in 2012.  The Department of Justice offers four easy ways to help keep private financial information out of criminals hands.

The FTC and U.S. Dept. of Justice reminds consumers to use the word SCAM:

S - Be stingy about giving out your personal information to others unless you have a reason to trust them, regardless of where you are

C - Check your financial information regularly, and look for what should be there and what shouldn't:

A -Ask periodically for a copy of your credit report. Your credit report should list all bank and financial accounts under your name,

M - Maintain careful records of your banking and financial accounts. Even though financial institutions are required to maintain copies of your checks and debit transactions
