Bishop Hartmayer celebrated mass Tuesday for the election of the new pope. He asked all pastors throughout the 90 county Diocese of Savannah to offer mass.
The bishop and fathers wore red in support of their cardinal brothers so far away but so close in their thoughts. During mass, they asked everyone to be a part of the selection of the new pope. It's something one parishioner says has changed over the years.
"Watching the church change. When I went to church, you looked at the priest's back, everything was said in Latin. Now it's we the congregation are more included, if you would, in what's going on in the mass," said Roger Haneline.
Haneline has seen three popes in his lifetime and the election of his fourth pope would be exciting. He said to get a new pope for St. Patrick's Day would be something more for the city to celebrate.
