The commander of Third Infantry Division acknowledged the soldier killed in an "inside attack" and soldiers killed in a helicopter crash were all troops of the Marne division.
Maj. Gen. Robert "Abe" Abrams spoke of the separate incidents in a satellite briefing from Afghanistan to Pentagon reporters Wednesday.
Abrams praised SSgt. Rex Schad, 26, a member of 3-69 Armor in the First Armor Brigade Combat Team. Schad was serving in his second deployment to Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense released Schad's information on Wednesday, but had not released the names and details on the five killed in the helicopter crash. But Abrams noted they were members of the Aviation Brigade stationed at Hunter Army Airfield.
"They were out conducting routine night-vision goggle training in a local training area. Other than that, it's under investigation," Abrams stated.
