Savannah-Chatham Metro Island Precinct officers are continuing to search the area around an east Savannah cemetery for body remains that were stolen from the cemetery Monday night.
Just before 10 a.m., Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were called out to the cemetery on Wheaton Street by employees who found two caskets out of their vaults. One of the caskets was damaged, but not opened. The second casket was opened and the body was removed. The body removed was that of a woman who died in 2001.
Police searched the cemetery grounds, the surrounding areas, Truman Parkway homeless camps and storm water canals with the help of a dog specially trained to find bodies. Police helicopter Eagle 3, Island Precinct officers, detectives and Crime Suppression Unit officers, Downtown Precinct officers and SCMPD canines helped with the search.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Islands Precinct Investigators at 912.898.3252, Crimestoppers at 912.234.2020 or text CRIMES (274637).
