Around 5 p.m. Thursday, Bluffton Police Department, Bluffton Township Fire Department and Beaufort County EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 278 and Buck Island Road for a traffic collision involving a tractor-trailer and an automobile.
According to police, the tractor-trailer was heading eastbound on Highway 278 and automobile was traveling westbound on Highway 278 when the wreck occurred. Authorities say the white Cadillac attempted to turn left onto Buck Island Road and was struck by the tractor-trailer.
Responders had to extricate the driver of the white Cadillac. The driver was then airlifted to Savannah Memorial.
Bluffton Police Department is continuing to investigate the wreck.
Highway 278 eastbound was closed for approximately one hour.
