Former Lyons police chief sentenced to 10 years in prison

LYONS, GA (WTOC) -

A former police chief is heading for the other side of the cell door.

Ricky Newsome has pled guilty to distribution of marijuana and violation of oath of office.

Investigators say the former Lyons chief stole evidence from drug cases and gave it to a local drug dealer.

A judge denied Newsome first offender status. He will serve 10 years in prison and five years on probation.
